Key Projects

An important part of the research and development works within the COSYS department are con-dicted in the framework of three key projects playing a unifying transversal role within the institut.

  • R5G (5th Generation of Road) including the works on electromobility,

R5G

Ifsttar launched the "5th generation Road" approach (R5G). The first phase consisted in labeling technical bricks in a controlled situation (TRL 1 to 5). The second phase consists in demonstrating a subset of these innovations in real situations (TRL 6 to 7). The third phase will be to create the public policy tools allowing to develop relevant solutions (TRL 8-9).

• The R5G project benefits from resources allocated to various incentive tools: twenty laboratories from the five departments, including all five from COSYS, are part of the project on different themes.

• At the national level, R5G is supported in particular by IDRRIM and USIRF. Among the institutional partners, CEREMA, ENPC and ENTPE, through joint units and teams associated with Ifsttar, are part of the project. Among the industrialists, groups such as COLAS, EIFFAGE, EUROVIA, EGIS and TOTAL participate, through the financing of experiments and the appropriation of the approach, to the success of this one.

The R5G project is part of the key project of the FEHRL "Forever Open Road" and made it possible: 

  • To influence the content of European calls for projects:  management of FEHRL6 expert groups from 2011 to 2013, opening of H2020 8.1 and 8.2 lines in 2013, launching of ERANET and INFRAVATION in early 2014, launching of two CSAs in 2015 on the coordination of the European players in the field.

  • To participate to the structuring of the French road sector: proposal for an R5G call for expressions of interest after the NRTEE in 2011, proposal for an AMI to PIA2 via the MEDDE in spring 2013, mid 2013 contribution to the Lauvergeon Innovation 2030 report, registration to the SNTEDD (National Strategy of Ecological Transition towards Sustainable Development) in 2014, initiation of a strategic approach carried out by the DGITM and the DRI during the summer of 2014. 

  •  Increase the visibility of Ifsttar's works at the national level (press articles and professional journals, solicitations for presentations: 10 interventions scheduled between October 2014 and March 2015) and international (keynote at the IRF congress in 2011, "Road design and design" award at the 2011 PIARC World Road Congress, keynote at ICWCUCA in 2012, invitation by the TRB Workshop on road vehicle automation in 2013, invitation by Bentley Systems in November 2014) .

Sense-City

Sense-City is located in the heart of the Campus of the Cité Descartes in Marne-la-Vallée. It is an "Equipment of Excellence" project of the PIA, running from 2011 to 2019 and endowed with 9 M €. This program brings together Ifsttar, ESIEE-Paris, LPICM (Ecole Polytechnique and CNRS), CSTB, UPEM and Inria.

Sense-City offers a range of prototyping and performance evaluation equipment of micro and nano sensors for the sustainable city. 

As a R§D platform open to academics, industrialists and local authorities, Sense-City takes part in the positioning of Ifsttar and Cité Descartes as a key innovation center for the city of the future.

The project is centered around a "mini-climatic city", a vast reconfigurable hall of 400 m² capable of accommodating, under controlled environmental conditions, realistic urban scenarii including the main components of the city, such as buildings, infrastructures, distribution networks, vegetation and soils. The first Sense-City urban scenario has been launched in early 2018. The Sense-City climatic mini-city is thus a space dedicated to the evaluation of technological innovations for the sustainable city.

Railway

Railway is an important part of the activities of four departments of Ifsttar and in particular of the COSYS department. This activity is partly carried out with the IRT Railenium and IRT SystemX.

Railenium is the only 100% railway IRT in France, resulting from the PIA call. It covers both railway infrastructure and vehicle issues. The research and development works of IRT are divided into eight work programs (WP). The COSYS department is the pilot or co-pilot of two  of them and four of the eight Work Programs referents are members of the COSYS department.

 The COSYS department has applied to become an Associate Member of the Joint Technology Undertaking "Shift2rail" (created by the European Commission, it will pilot all railway R & D programs) in collaboration with Railenium, within a consortium of Academics, SMEs and European industrialists.
